We live in a culture that glorifies self-criticism as the engine of performance. “Be tougher on yourself.” “Don’t let up.” “You’re not good enough — work harder.” But research from the past 15 years tells a different story: self-compassion — the capacity to treat yourself with the same kindness you would offer a dear friend in suffering — is a stronger predictor of resilience, motivation, and mental health than self-criticism.
